Announcing a new curbside recycling program

for rural communities

The initial pilot project with Neighbors NWA helped Boston Mountain Solid Waste District recognize what works well for rural areas in a bagged, curbside recycling program. The project ran from the end of January to June 30, 2024.

We are now looking to work with more haulers to bring the rural curbside recycling program to more communities. See below for how it works!

Blue bags hold 20 – 30 gallons and are for your mixed paper, shredded paper, paperboard, junk mail, newspaper, and magazines. Flatten cardbroad and place it underneath the bags.

Green bags hold 55 – 60 gallons and are for your #1 and #2 plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and steel cans.

Each household participating in rural curbside recycling receives five bags for per quarter. If your household needs extra bags, contact your hauler to receive up to five additional bags for the remainder of the quarter. At the beginning of the next quarter, an additional five recycling bags will be dropped off at your household.

How the Rural, Curbside Recycling Program Works:

-Contact your hauler to see if they offer curbside recycling service

-If you trash hauler participates in the bagged, curbside recycling program, they will bring you five recycling bags to for a three-month period.

-The bags are large. Put them by the curb on pickup day only once they are almost full.

-Five more recycling bags will be dropped off at your home for the next quarter.

What Belongs in Your Recycling Bags:

Green Bags -

  • #1 Plastic bottles (water bottles, soda bottles)

  • #2 Plastic bottles (milk jugs, detergent bottles)

  • Aluminum cans

  • Steel cans

Blue Bags -

  • Mixed paper

  • Paperboard

  • Junk mail

  • Newspaper, magazines

You can now bring FOOD WASTE to the Boston Mountain recycling center in Prairie Grove!

Food waste drop-off at the Boston Mountain Solid Waste District Recycling Center in Prairie Grove

Bring us your plate scraps, prep waste, uneaten leftovers, banana peels, coffee grounds (+filters) and more!

  1. Bring us your food waste

  2. Empty your food waste into the red cart at the recycling drop-off

  3. Close the lid!

The food waste will be picked up by Food Recycling Solutions and taken to the Fayetteville Compost Facility. There, it will be mixed with yard waste and turned into compost that residents can purchase for use at their homes!

We are giving away free 3.5-gallon food waste buckets and lids to make it easy as ever to collect your food waste and bring it to our food waste drop-off!

The food waste drop-off program is a great option if you want to recycle your food waste but cannot do so in your backyard, or for composting the items you cannot compost in your backyard (meat, dairy, and gluten).

Food waste bucket

Food waste creates methane in the landfill- a greenhouse gas 28x more potent than carbon dioxide.

When food waste is diverted from the landfill and turned into compost to be used in gardens and on lawns, it becomes a soil amendment that balances soil pH, helps soil retain water, and sequesters more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere- helping to reduce the effects of climate change.

Ask us about RECYCLING BINS for rural recycling drop-off locations.

18-gallon and 6-gallon recycling bins are available for rural residents.

These containers make it easy to collect recycling in the home and bring them to a rural recycling drop-off location!

We want to remove barriers to recycling. To help our rural residents take advantage of the recycling center in Prairie Grove or one of our monthly rural recycling drop-offs in Elkins, Goshen, and Winslow, we are giving away 18-gallon and 6-gallon recycling bins. These bins will help you get your recyclables from your house to the recycling drop-off.

A good tip is to keep the 6-gallon bin inside to collect recyclables in the home and keep the 18-gallon recycling bin outside for you to empty the 6-gallon bin into! Lids are available for the 18-gallon bins.

Bins are free and for rural residents!

Recycling Program for Car Seats and Bulk Storage Bins*

*Storage bins and lids from Rubbermaid and Sterilite only

Old car seats and bulk storage bins are bulky, plastic products that many people have, but there hasn’t been a way to recycle them. Until now!

We’ve partnered with Ecotech Consumer Products in Fayetteville to turn these old, bulky plastics into new products. Our partnership supports the circular economy for recycling in Northwest Arkansas, which keeps materials in production and recycled locally.

All Car Seat & Bulk Bin Drop-off Locations:

Boston Mountain Solid Waste District- 11398 Bond Road, Prairie Grove
